Bethlehem Nursery is a premier collector and propagator of rare, unusual, choice conifers and other woody ornamentals from around the world. We specialize in dwarf and miniature conifers, witch's brooms of all types, and Sciadopitys cultivars.

Japanese Umbrella Pine, Sciadopitys verticillata, is not actually a pine. It is more closely related to Bald Cypress, Dawn Redwood, and Giant Sequoia than pine and looks uniquely different from any other conifer. We have spent years collecting and growing more than 60 different forms from 'Ruslyn's Golden Parasol' with it's bright golden foliage to 'Picola', a miniature globe form with short dark-green needles. Many of these choice specimens are available with more being developed. These gems are rarely found in landscapes even more rarely found available in nurseries and garden centers. We are pleased to be able to offer them in such a great diversity.

Dwarf and miniature describes size specifications set forth by The American Conifer Society in effort to describe the amount of growth that may be expected per year. Environmental conditions greatly influence these specifications and the ultimate growth could be more or less depending on where ultimately planted. Many of our specimens grow less than 1" per year including some of the smallest which will only grow about 1/4" per year.

Witch's brooms are genetic variations of the parent plant. They come in all sizes, shapes, and colors and in many cases barely resemble the plant that they originated from. We evaluate and select the best of these variations for unique coloration, dramatic form, or miniature size. Many of these selections grow only a fraction of an inch per year.
